SnapCare is the fastest-growing healthcare staffing solution in the United States, originally known as SnapNurse. Faced with explosive growth and an evolving market, the company transitioned from a traditional nurse staffing agency model into a technology-first marketplace. This transformation was driven by the need to give hospitals and clinics more direct control over staffing and to scale up services (per diem shifts, travel nurses, permanent placements) efficiently nationwide. SnapCare’s leadership mandated a robust digital platform to support tens of thousands of daily users, integrating complex workflows such as credential verification, shift scheduling across multiple facilities, compliance tracking, and instant payroll for clinicians. Preux was involved in the platform’s evolution, contributing to architecture and product development to ensure the system could meet enterprise-grade reliability, security, and scalability requirements.
SnapCare invested heavily in building a cloud-based, two-sided staffing marketplace platform. Preux’s role focused on refining the architecture and implementing key features that would set SnapCare apart in flexibility and scale. The delivered solution included:
Unified Staffing Portal for Facilities: A secure web portal where healthcare administrators can post shift requests (per diem needs, contract positions, float pool openings) in a matter of seconds. Facilities have full visibility into their postings and can track in real time which shifts have been claimed, which are still open, and any that might be at risk of going unfilled. Advanced filters and automation allow managers to target postings: for example, flag a shift as “internal staff only” for a period, after which it opens to the broader marketplace if unfilled. The portal also provides up-to-date cost projections as shifts are requested, helping facilities manage staffing budgets proactively.
Clinician Mobile App: A feature-rich mobile application for nurses and other clinicians that provides a one-stop experience – professionals can browse and apply for open shifts that match their profile and preferences, manage their work schedule, and track earnings. The app notifies clinicians of opportunities (using location and skill match algorithms to surface nearby relevant shifts) and allows them to upload/manage credentials easily by taking photos or integrating with verification databases. Crucially, after completing shifts, clinicians can clock out in the app and trigger the instant pay feature, receiving their earnings immediately rather than on a traditional pay cycle.
AI-Driven Matching & Optimization: At the core of the platform is a matching engine that leverages machine learning to pair open shifts with the best available clinicians in the network. The algorithm considers dozens of factors – clinician specialty, certifications, proximity, past performance ratings, availability, and the facility’s preferences or history – to rank candidates for each shift. This has enabled SnapCare to fill same-day shifts in minutes. Additionally, the system optimizes workforce utilization by first matching a facility’s internal float pool staff to open shifts (saving cost), and only if none are available does it cascade to SnapCare’s broader pool of 370,000+ clinicians.
Credentialing and Compliance Automation: The platform integrates with background check APIs, license verification services, and maintains an internal credential database. When a clinician signs up or applies for a shift, the system automatically verifies that their licenses and certifications are up to date and appropriate for the role and location (e.g., state nursing license validity). Expiration dates are tracked and both clinicians and admins receive alerts well in advance. This automation dramatically reduces administrative overhead and ensures that facilities only see candidates who meet compliance standards, which is critical for Joint Commission certification.
Workforce Analytics & Reporting: SnapCare’s solution offers analytics dashboards to both sides. Facilities can analyze staffing patterns, fill rates, response times, and cost savings achieved by using their internal float pool versus external contractors. They can also generate compliance reports (e.g., a log of all clinicians who worked at their site, with credentials) on demand. On the clinician side, individuals can view detailed earnings reports, hours worked by facility or department, and even quality metrics (like feedback from facilities). These insights help hospitals make data-driven staffing decisions and help SnapCare continually refine operations.
Scalable Cloud Architecture: Given the enormous user base and real-time nature of the service, the platform was built with microservices and event-driven architecture. Preux helped ensure critical components – such as the real-time notification service for new shifts, the payment processing pipeline, and the matching engine – are decoupled and horizontally scalable. High availability is achieved through multi-region cloud deployment, and robust APIs enable integration with hospital HR systems if needed (some large clients choose to connect their internal scheduling software to SnapCare’s API to automatically hand off unfilled shifts). Security was engineered at an enterprise level: HIPAA-compliant data handling, encryption of sensitive personal data, and fine-grained access controls for different user roles (recruiters, facility execs, clinicians, etc.).
SnapCare’s platform has fundamentally improved how healthcare organizations manage staffing. Facilities using SnapCare report saving 15–20% on staffing costs by reducing overtime and agency fees – a direct result of being able to prioritize existing staff and fill gaps more efficiently via the marketplace. In fact, many hospital groups have successfully implemented internal float pools with SnapCare’s free module, covering a significant portion of last-minute vacancies internally and resorting to external clinicians only when needed. The speed of filling shifts has also increased dramatically: the average time to fill an open PRN shift dropped from hours (under the old manual approach) to just minutes on SnapCare, thanks to instant alerts and the large talent pool. This responsiveness proved critical during surges (for example, COVID-19 spikes), where SnapCare helped facilities bring in qualified help on very short notice, undoubtedly contributing to better patient care continuity.
Clinicians have equally embraced the platform – over 350,000 healthcare professionals are registered, and the active user base continues to grow. The promise of same-day pay and the user-friendly app experience led to high engagement and retention of clinicians in the network. SnapCare’s focus on transparency (professionals can see exactly what they will earn and when) and support (24/7 live support integrated into the app) has set it apart from traditional staffing routes. The platform’s success is reflected in industry recognition: SnapCare (as SnapNurse) was ranked #1 in healthcare and #2 overall on the Inc. 5000 list for 2022, and won a Gold Stevie Award in 2021 for its rapid growth. These accolades underscore the platform’s impact at scale.
Operationally, the tech-first approach allowed SnapCare to handle a surge to $1+ billion in annual revenue within a few years, something that would have been impossible without automation. By late 2023, the company ramped up its technology investments by 300% to keep advancing the platform, showing a long-term commitment to innovation. Preux’s contributions to the architecture have helped position SnapCare to evolve further – the system is already extending into full-service workforce management (permanent hires, vendor management, etc.) as well as exploring AI-driven predictive staffing (forecasting needs before they arise). In summary, the platform not only met SnapCare’s immediate needs in transforming their business, but established a sustainable digital ecosystem that is reshaping how healthcare staffing is done, to the benefit of both medical facilities and clinicians.
