Context
A venture-backed startup aiming to modernize the residential rental process in the U.S. The founder identified that renting an apartment or home was fragmented and inefficient – requiring dozens of touchpoints between listing a property and signing a lease. The vision was to create a hassle-free, self-service rental marketplace connecting tech-savvy renters (such as relocating professionals and college students) with landlords and property managers. The company needed to build a secure, scalable platform that could handle property listings, scheduling of visits, tenant applications, background checks, lease signing, and payments in one seamless flow.

Renting a home involved 20+ separate steps and multiple intermediaries, from contacting agents to filling repetitive applications for each property – resulting in frustration and lost time for renters.

Landlords and property managers lacked a unified tool to advertise units, vet tenants, and manage leases, instead juggling multiple platforms (listing sites, email, background check services, paper leases).

Coordinating property tours was cumbersome. Prospects often waited days for appointments, and staff had to be on-site for every viewing, limiting flexibility and stretching resources.

Critical checks like identity verification, credit/background screening, and lease signing were mostly manual or on paper, increasing turnaround time and the risk of errors or non-compliance.

There was no central data insight – landlords didn’t have analytics on how many people viewed their property or why applicants dropped off, and renters had little transparency on application status.
Solution
Preux delivered a rental marketplace platform covering web, mobile, and backend infrastructure. It streamlined the rental process end-to-end while remaining intuitive for users.

- Self-Service Tours: We introduced self-scheduling tours with optional smart lock integration, enabling verified renters to view properties without an agent present.
- Reusable Application & Screening: Renters complete a one-time application with background and credit check consent. The system runs screenings via integrated APIs and returns results to landlords within minutes.
- Instant Offers & E-Leases: Renters can submit an offer directly. If accepted, the platform auto-generates a lease with e-signatures and collects deposits electronically.
Outcome
Acceptance into a top accelerator and successful seed funding are testament to the platform’s impact and scalability. Investors and partners were impressed by the product’s ability to seamlessly integrate all steps of the rental journey. With the digital foundation in place, the product is now scaling to more cities and forging partnerships (including discussions with a property manager overseeing 600,000 units) – confident that the platform can handle enterprise-level volume. The solution not only improved efficiency and user satisfaction but also gives a competitive edge in the proptech market as an early mover offering an end-to-end rental solution.
